ugh
Just learned that the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act was pushed through Congress partially by the Center for Consumer Freedom--the amorphous "nonprofit" behind such charmers as HumaneWatch. Immediate headache; more later.
I love animals. Lots of people claim the same. But our statements about our fondness for them are loaded: we eat them, we abuse them, we gawk at them, we admire or fear them, we use them for their bodies or love them for their companionship. We are inconsistently ruthless.
This is a space for the dialogues I have between the person I am, who lives in a world of media representation and the wafting smell of delicious cheeseburgers, and the person I aspire to be: consistent, compassionate, dedicated, and absurdly well-informed.
I have high standards for myself, as well as high aspirations, and quite a lot of naggy guilt. I have a flair for the dramatic and two cat companions. I want to bring justice and tolerance into the world. I would also like a snack, please.
But on the bright side:
